In 1959, the Les Paul Standard made a change to wider, fatter jumbo frets which made it a more facile guitar. The significance of this change wouldn't be felt until the late '60s when Clapton, Bloomfield, Peter Green, and other emerging guitarists discovered its warm, thick BurstBucker voice and fast, smooth and easy-playing neck. Then the Les Paul began its ascent toward ultimate icon status.

While the Les Pauls made between 1958 and 1960 consist of some of the most coveted electric guitars in history, the '59 "Bursts" are by far the most sought-after out of those 3 years. The "Holy Grail" of solidbody electric guitars, the 1959 Les Paul is viewed with the highest regards by guitarists and collectors alike because of their historical significance and their exceeding rarity, with a mere 635 guitars shipped that year. With Les Paul sales diminishing every year since 1953 — just a year after the Les Paul was introduced — Gibson chose to update the look of the Les Paul in 1958 from a flashy Gold Top finish to an elegant cherry sunburst. The tops of those first bursts in '58 exhibited very slight, subtle figure patterns and were relatively plain in comparison to the beautiful highly-figured maple tops on those '59 Les Pauls. Even after 50+ years, the 1959s Les Paul Standards continue to hold their place as the most desirable instruments in the Les Paul family, and today, the Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard Historic Reissue offers a faithful reproduction of those highly prized instruments, with accuracy down to the very last detail.

The 1959 Les Paul holds true to the classic ingredients with its solid mahogany body and maple top, and features the slight updates from the specifications of the '58s. The one-piece neck is carved from mahogany into a slightly thinner (in comparison to the '58), yet still comfortably rounded, neck profile, which remains as one of Gibson's most beloved neck profiles. The 24.75"-scale neck is topped off with a period-correct 12" radius one-piece rosewood fingerboard that carries classic cellulose trapezoid inlays.

In order to capture the authentic vintage tone of those late '50s PAF humbuckers, Gibson took a closer look at the design of the originals. Made in the image of classic PAFs, these pickups employ Alnico III magnets and are wound with unequal turns of  42 AWG wire to deliver that renowned PAF bite and growl. While these pickups are capable of producing a nice, clean tone, they can also dish out that creamy, singing tone when you roll back on the tone controls thanks to the bumblebee tone capacitors.

The 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue has a true vintage vibe thanks to period-correct features including a set of vintage-style deluxe Kluson tuning machines, hot-hide glue neck fit, a Historic Truss Rod Assembly with no tubing, accurate body and fingerboard binding and vintage-correct Aniline dye.

The package is completed by a durable Custom Shop hardshell case with a pink plush-lined interior for superior protection of this fine instrument and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
